flash

FlashEff

Here is a pretty cool flash-effects library you can apply to text and images. It can be handy in rotators, slideshows creation, presentations. Even if you grudge spending 99$ for more then 130 effects, you can just have a look at demos searching new interesting ideas. Personaly I found interesting unpack, 3dCamFocus, StationPanels.

_etc

I’m going to continue introduce people to the best Russian flashers and their blogs. This time I’ll talk about _etc. One of the respected flasher.ru moderators, the man who closed more than 9000 topics for “meaningless title”, he seemingly knows bytecode better than parents know their children. How to explain these excellent peaces he’s made otherwise?
One by one(links guide to examples where sources also can be downloaded, or to a page with download link).

FontLoader. This one let us upload swf-files with embedded-fonts to main swf and use them in main one. So short, so usefull!
MouseWheel. In AS2 if flash has had focus then mouse scroll will not scroll html-page. This is not true for AS3 unfortunately. This class cure the problem (as a matter of a fact it adds as2-flash to stage and connects with LocalConnection to it, but does this in a very smart way).
getDefinitionNames. It returns names of all classes in loaded swf or defined domain. A nice tool and weapon of a flash-hacker.

Convert to pdf

I have been asked to make a statistics generator. I've been told I can make it any way I want. Perl, php, php+flex – they doesn’t matter. The main essential feature is ablity to print reports and save them in pdf, or in excel, what is more preffered. I would like to make it with flex so much, couse it has cool graphics components and cause I need practice in flex also. But in php I have great option in how data can be saved to pdf or xls. To save data in pdf I can use pdflib, fpdf, html2pdf. To save data in excel I there are PEAR::Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer and wonderful PHPExcel as people says. I’m sure there will be some troubles with Russian codepages, some minor bugs, but work will be done. And so to flash I don’t have so much choice. All I have is AlivePDF. Well, I have to try. In the worst case I can send data from flash to php and generate report at server.

Speaking of AlivePDF, the guys who’ve made it, maintain lots of cool projects at bytearray.org. MouseGesture is a lib to recognize mouse gestures, BananaSlice is to convert MovieClip to bitmap sequences, what could be of use in games (to increase performance), JPEGEncoder is to save bimap to jpeg and many-many others delicious things!

Badim

Vadim (use nickname “Badim” usually) – known flash game developer among Russians. I believe in year 2007 or so he retired casual games development office (“dambshit” he called their games) and began making flash-games on his own. He’s made nice start, he’s made over 40 000$ for the first year. This is of course less than good plastic surgeon makes, but rather well for programmer from Russia. He’s known to flasher.ru clubbers, where all Russian-speaking flashers hanging; develops his own portal (which monthly income’s exceeded 1 000$); carries his own blog and attends conferences. Why am I writing about him? Well, he’s may be not the best flash game developer, and may be he’s not without vanity, but if you’re to become flash game developer, then his blog is an information treasure for you (yes, for English-speakers too, cause Vadim also carries his blog in English). What are fgl, mochiads, mochibot to? Vadim tells! How to sell your game, what portal owners want from game developers, what sponsorship is? Vadim tells! Vadim share everything: ways of earning for flash game developer, links to popular game portals, his revenue reports, sponsors mail addresses and links to interesting articles he’d found in Internet.

Заикающееся радио

Internet radio ct.fm has started with audio player written by me. And it has experienced some problems right away. Testing ad block was launched which must be played right after user connected to stream. But this ad block make flash stutter. You can hear how it sounds here; I had recorded a snatch from my sound card. To keep in mind so to say.

Flash bug? Not exactly...

I'm making audio-player for ct.fm. And again I have a bug in a place where it's not expected! Let's see the picture:

There is an icon 20x20 pixels. The 1px thick border is puted over. It's also 20x20 pixels. So why piece of the icon appear beyond the bounds of the border? Pada-pada-pam-pum-peeu! I was going to start swearing at  damned Hindu-developers, when suddenly realized that it was I who was the fool.

  1. (x=8, y=8.5, w=20, h=20)

So what is wrong with this trace? 8.5 is a key number. The clip containing icon and border is placed in fractional coordinates. As far as fractional coordinates don't exist for pixels - anti-aliasing is applied to the clip which results to the bug which makes me swear.

P.S. Photoshop nearly has made me swear also. How to enlarge selected area with "transform tool" without anti-aliasing (couse I need perfect enlarged pixels)?  Very simple! Go to Edit=>Preferences=>General and set "Image interpolation" to "Nearest neighbor".

Auditorium

Here is a link to brilliant puzzle game. Perfect sound accompaniment, excellent design. It's a pity it's not freeware, still even demo version is enjoyable. This is how flash games must be made!

SpringGraph

Stuble upon some interesting component for flex which displays a set of items that are linked to each other. This is Ruben Swieringa's application using this component on the photo. Here is a link to it.

Stardust - flash particle engine

Found interesting flash particle engine in Internet. Looks nice, it's friends with Papervision3d and some other flash 3d-engines.
